Looking for practical ways to protect your business and make better technology decisions? Start with these VWS resources. This page brings together published guides, a useful email-security checklist, and questions to take into your next IT conversation.
Start here: protect your business email
A convincing message can put payments, customer information, and account access at risk. Our email security guide for small businesses explains phishing, impersonation, MFA, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in plain language. It also explains how managed protection can support your employees.
The guide includes examples for trades and contractors, legal firms, and financial businesses. Use it to start a conversation with the people who handle invoices, customer documents, and day-to-day technology decisions.
A five-question email-security checklist
You can use this checklist in your next staff or provider meeting. An uncertain answer is a useful starting point for investigation, not proof that a compromise has happened.
- Is multifactor authentication enabled for every business email account, including administrators?
- Have we identified all services that send mail as our domain and checked our email authentication?
- Do we verify requests to change bank details through a trusted contact method?
- Can employees report suspicious messages quickly, and do they know who responds?
- Have we tested how to recover important email or files after an incident?
For an unusual payment request, use a phone number already on file. Do not rely on contact details provided inside the suspicious message. If you believe an account or payment has been compromised, contact your IT provider promptly and your bank when relevant.

Questions to ask before choosing managed IT support
A useful proposal explains responsibilities as well as tools. Ask what routine support includes, how onboarding works, how urgent issues are handled, and which tasks require a separate project. Confirm the support coverage that applies to your package and who manages email security, backups, and access changes.
For pricing, ask which users, devices, sites, and licenses are included. For security, ask what happens after an alert. For recovery, ask for a practical explanation of what can be restored and how that process is tested.
Resources are a starting point, not a site-specific assessment
Every business uses different systems and handles different information. A general checklist cannot determine whether your environment is secure or meets a particular regulatory obligation. Use these resources to identify questions, then agree a scope suited to your business.
